Overview
The Shishapangma Base Camp Trek is not a casual walk. It’s a remote, high-altitude route into one of Tibet’s least-visited corners, ending at the foot of the only 8,000m peak that sits entirely inside Tibet. Access runs through the Kyirong border crossing, a shorter and increasingly popular alternative to the old Zhangmu route, followed by a rough overland stretch through Nyalam and the high Tibetan plateau before the trail turns toward Shishapangma itself.
This isn’t a trek for a first-timer. Days at altitude add up fast, road conditions on the Tibet side can be unpredictable, and the base camp sits above 5,000m with no rescue infrastructure nearby. What you get in return is real isolation: empty plateau, glacial lakes, and a mountain most trekkers never see up close.
Permits for this route are tighter than for standard Everest or Kailash trips, and the Tibet Autonomous Region can restrict or close the area with little notice. Book with flexibility built in.
