Langtang Valley Trek

Overview

The Langtang Valley Trek is the closest major trekking valley to Kathmandu, yet it feels genuinely far from everything once you are inside it. The trail follows the Langtang River upstream through bamboo and rhododendron forest, past mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens, to Langtang Village — rebuilt with real warmth after the 2015 earthquake — and on to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 metres, with its ancient monastery and yak cheese factory.

The journey starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the small town at the edge of Langtang National Park. From there the trail climbs steadily up the valley, with the mountains growing larger and more impressive the higher you go. Most trekkers spend an extra day at Kyanjin Gompa to climb Tserko Ri at 4,984 metres, one of the best and most underrated viewpoints in Nepal, with views of Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, and Gangchempo reaching all the way into Tibet.

What makes this trek especially valuable is how much genuine high-altitude scenery it delivers so close to Kathmandu. Because the trailhead at Syabrubesi is just a few hours by road, trekkers can be walking through remote Tamang villages within a day of leaving the capital, without the flights or long approach marches other major treks require.

The Langtang region’s slow, ongoing recovery since the 2015 earthquake also gives the trek a depth that goes beyond scenery, with a warmth from local hosts that many visitors describe as some of the most memorable hospitality in Nepal.

Permits for this trek are issued under Nepal’s Department of Immigration Trekking Permit system, alongside the Langtang National Park entry permit.
