Overview
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a pilgrimage to one of the most sacred sites on earth, revered across Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon tradition. The yatra centers on two elements: a visit to Lake Manasarovar, itself considered one of the holiest lakes in the region, and the kora (circumambulation) around the base of Mount Kailash (6,638m), a roughly 52km circuit completed on foot over three demanding days that include a crossing of the Dolma La Pass at 5,660m.
The route to get there is part of the journey. From Kathmandu, the trip crosses into Tibet via the Kyirong border, then follows the long overland stretch across the Tibetan plateau to Manasarovar before continuing to Darchen, the traditional starting point for the kora.
This is not a technical climb, and no permit exists to summit Kailash itself; the mountain is considered off-limits to climbing by all traditions that hold it sacred. The challenge instead is altitude, distance, and the Dolma La crossing, done in a single long day that pushes above 5,600m. Prior high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended before attempting this yatra.
