Overview
Mera Peak is the highest NMA trekking peak in Nepal, standing at 6,470m on the edge of the Khumbu region. The summit panorama takes in five of the world’s 8,000m peaks: Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Everest.
Mera Peak has become a popular choice for climbers new to mountaineering. It’s physically demanding, but technically straightforward, with snow slopes that don’t exceed 30 degrees. Good physical fitness and a willingness to push through long trekking days matter more here than prior technical climbing experience.
The route begins with a flight to Lukla, then heads into the Hinku Valley through pine and rhododendron forest, past grazing pastures and meadows, and into a remote stretch of moraine and glacial lakes before reaching Mera High Camp at 5,800m. Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing made the first ascent on 20 May 1953 via the Mera La route, which is still the standard line used today.
Mera La and the Amphu Lapcha Pass can be added on as an extension for climbers who want a more technical route and extra acclimatization built into the trip.
