Overview
The Lhasa Cultural Tour is the easiest and most accessible way to experience Tibet’s spiritual heart, focused entirely on the capital and its surrounding monasteries. Without any long-distance overland travel, this short trip leaves plenty of time to properly explore Lhasa’s most important religious and historical sites while acclimatizing comfortably to the altitude.
The tour centers on the Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and one of the most recognisable buildings in the world, alongside the Jokhang Temple, Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred shrine, and the atmospheric Barkhor Street circuit around it. A visit to Sera Monastery, famous for its animated afternoon monk debates, and Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world, rounds out a deep look at Tibetan Buddhist life, alongside the Dalai Lamas’ summer residence at Norbulingka.
This trip is suitable for travelers of nearly any age or fitness level, since it involves no trekking and stays entirely within Lhasa and its immediate surroundings. It combines some of Tibet’s most important religious sites, genuine Tibetan Buddhist culture, and a gentle introduction to high-altitude travel, making it an ideal short trip on its own or a first stop before a longer Tibet itinerary.
Tibet Travel Permits for this trip are arranged in line with regulations from the Tibet Tourism Bureau.
