High Altitude

The Phoksundo Lake Trek follows the Thuli Bheri and Phoksundo rivers from Juphal through Dunai, Chhepka, and Shyanta to Ringmo village, a traditional Bon settlement built on an ancient landslide dam that holds the lake in place. Unlike the longer Lower Dolpo Circuit, this trek is a direct out-and-back journey to the lake, making it a shorter, more accessible way to experience the remote Dolpo region.

What sets this trek apart, even from other restricted areas in Nepal, is how completely isolated it remains. Because Upper Dolpo requires a special government permit on top of the Shey Phoksundo National Park fee, and because the region only opened to trekkers in 1989, the villages along the route have kept traditions that have faded almost everywhere else in the Himalaya. The landscape itself shifts dramatically across the trek, from green forested valleys near Phoksundo Lake to the stark, high desert plateau around Shey Gompa and Saldang, giving the sense of crossing several distinct worlds in a single journey.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek follows the Kali Gandaki, the world's deepest river gorge, between the towering peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, passing through the Thakali villages of Jomsom and Marpha before reaching the sacred Muktinath Temple at 3,800 metres. Revered by both Hindus and Buddhists for its 108 sacred water spouts and eternal natural flame, Muktinath draws thousands of pilgrims each year who come to bathe in its icy streams, believed to wash away sins.

What makes this trek genuinely rare is how deliberately Mustang has kept tourism small since the trail first opened. Because the region sits in a rain shadow, it stays dry and walkable even during the summer monsoon, when most of Nepal disappears under cloud. The walled city of Lo Manthang itself feels less like a trekking destination and more like stepping into a living museum, with centuries-old monasteries, a former royal palace, and narrow lanes that have changed remarkably little since the kingdom's founding.

The Langtang Valley Trek follows the Langtang River upstream through bamboo and rhododendron forest, past mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens, to Langtang Village and on to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 metres, with its ancient monastery and yak cheese factory. Most trekkers spend an extra day at Kyanjin Gompa to climb Tserko Ri at 4,984 metres, one of the best and most underrated viewpoints in Nepal, with views reaching all the way into Tibet.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek moves from leafy lowland forests to arid, Tibetan-feeling high desert, crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres, one of the highest trekking passes in the world, with views of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri along the way. The route climbs through Chame, Pisang, and Manang before the pass, then descends through Muktinath and the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world's deepest canyon, to Jomsom.

The Everest View Trek climbs to Khumjung and the Everest View Hotel area at 3,800 metres, delivering the same breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam as the classic route, in a fraction of the time. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi valley through Phakding to Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa trading hub of the Khumbu, with a much lower risk of altitude sickness than the full trek to base camp.

The Gokyo Lakes Trek follows a quieter trail from Namche Bazaar up the Dudh Koshi valley to a chain of turquoise glacial lakes beside the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's longest, before climbing to Gokyo Ri at 5,357 metres. From the summit, trekkers take in a 360-degree panorama of four eight-thousanders: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, in one of the finest viewpoints in the entire Himalaya.

The Everest Three Passes Trek crosses all three of the Khumbu's high passes — Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La — linking every major valley in the region into one continuous high-altitude journey. The route visits both Everest Base Camp and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, with a summit push to Kala Patthar for the finest close-up view of Everest on the entire trail.

The Everest Base Camp Trek follows the Khumbu Valley from Lukla through Namche Bazaar and Tengboche to Everest Base Camp itself, with a side trip to Kala Patthar for the closest unobstructed view of Everest on the whole route. The trail passes through Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries, and rhododendron forest before climbing above the tree line into high alpine terrain near Gorak Shep.
